Does your dog sit and patiently wait for a scoop of your ice cream to fall, and intensely lick every drop to hit the floor? It’s hot for you, and your dog. You want to cool off, so does he. The next time you enjoy your frozen treats on a cool day, don’t tease your dog, make him a frozen dog treat too!

When making a frozen treat for your dog, use dairy products with caution, as dogs can’t digest dairy well. For this dog ice cream recipe you don’t need to add sugar, it’s unnecessary and not good for your dog.

You will need:

(makes about 10 cups)

½ cup creamy peanut butter

32oz plain low-fat yogurt

10 ice cream dog cups (Dixie works)

1-2 pieces of fruit (banana works great)

Directions:

In the bottom of your dogs ice cream cups, place about 2 inches of cut up pieces of his favorite fruit (banana). Set aside.

In a bowl, stir the yogurt.Once yogurt is creamy stir in peanut butter.Pour your yogurt and peanut butter mix over the fruit in the cups.

Let this freeze overnight or at least 3-4 hours.

Once it’s ready, give your best friend this yummy healthy ice cream.

You can bend the recipe if needed. If it is safe for your dog to have some sugar, vanilla yogurt would be a great substitute for plain low fat yogurt. Adding honey makes this recipe one that you want to taste.

There are things you can do to this basic recipe that will make it yummy for the whole family. This treat is healthy and simple to make. Your dog will absolutely love it! Give it to him on a hot day outdoors, but be careful that he doesn’t eat the ice cream cup as well.

Everybody loves peanut butter, even dogs. This peanut butter treats recipe is both easy and convenient to make, without the preservatives and added artificial additive you often find in store bought dog treats. This recipe is one of the easiest to make as most of the ingredients could already be found at your pantry.

Ingredients:
1/3 cup smooth peanut butter (make sure it’s organic)
1 cup oats (do not use the instant kind)
2 cups flour (wheat or rice)
1 cup water

Directions:

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F or 177 degrees C. Sift the flour to get rid of lumps, then line your tray with a cookie sheet. This will prevent your dough from sticking to the tray.

In a large bowl, combine the flour, oats, peanut butter and water. With a mixer or a spatula, mix up all the ingredients until you’re able to form a dough. If your dough is runny or too wet, you might need to add a few tablespoons of flour. Knead the dough thoroughly so it cooks evenly.

Flour a flat surface or a counter and roll out the dough into a quarter inch thickness. With a cookie cutter, cut out fun shapes from the rolled out dough, or cut up squares using a knife.

Place your cut pieces on the tray, making sure they are an inch apart from each other. Bake it in the oven for 30 minutes then flip them over and cook for another 10 minutes to allow even cooking. Once done, take them out of the oven and allow to cool before serving them to your dog, or storing them in a cool dry place.

These peanut butter treats will last up to a week in a dog treats jar, a month in the refrigerator and three months in the freezer.

Just a few reminders:

No need to add more peanuts. Although generally safe, peanuts should be given in moderation to dogs.

Never add chocolate, raisins or grapes! These are poisonous for your dog!

Have fun and enjoy!

Unknown to many, dogs love salmon. They are a good source of protein, low in fat and a rich source for Omega 3. Unfortunately, salmon dog treats can be quite expensive, and yet sold in small amounts.

Treats do not need to be expensive to be good. You can easily make them at home. Here’s a salmon dog treats recipe that is both affordable and easy to make. Most of the ingredients may already be in your kitchen, so go ahead and try them out. They’re so good, you’d make them for yourself too.

Ingredients:
1 can Salmon, preferably boneless (15 oz)
1 cup Flour (wheat or rice)
1 piece medium-sized egg
1/2 cup Grated Cheese (optional)

Directions:

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F or 177 degrees C. Line the the tray with a cookie sheet. This will prevent the treats from sticking to the pan.

Sift your flour to remove any lumps. Open the can of salmon into the food processor or blender, complete with its skin and juice. If your dog has a fondness for cheese, go ahead and add it to the blender. If not, you can leave out the cheese.

On a large bowl, whisk the egg until smooth and without lumps, add the pureed salmon to the the egg. With a mixer or with your clean hands, mix up the dough, gradually adding the flour into the dough. Never dump the flour all in one go, as it might cause the dough to form lumps.

Flour your counter or a flat surface and roll out the dough, until they are 1/4 of an inch. Cut the dough into strips or use a cookie cutter to cut them up into fun shapes. Put them on the tray, leaving an inch apart from each other.

Place into the oven for 20 minutes. Turn them over and cook the treats for another 10 minutes.

Once done, take the tray out from the oven and allow to cool completely before serving the treats to your dog or before storin. These treats will last for 7 days in dog treat jars, a month in the fridge or a month inside the freezer. Have fun!

If you follow the news closely, the US FDA has issued several warnings to pet owners about the possible association between the consumption of chicken jerky treats imported from China and illness in dogs. There has been no definitive cause as of yet, and a specific brand has not been pointed out.

So, instead of buying these treats, why not make them yourself? That way, you know they are perfectly safe for your dog, without the preservatives. You will also be able to save a lot of money since most dog treats tend to be overpriced. Surprisingly, this dog treat recipe is very easy to make. But be warned, they require patience as drying is a slow process. Don’t worry, you do not need to own a dehydrator. This chicken dog treat recipe requires only an oven, a very sharp knife, and patience. This is great to make when you’re stuck at home or on a weekend.

Ingredients:
Boneless Chicken breast

Directions:

Preheat the oven at 140-160 degrees F or 60 to 70 degrees C. If your oven cannot go below 200 (Like mine, my oven is only until 80 degrees C), do not let the oven door to close. This would help lower the temperature in your oven. Above this temperature might scorch the chicken. Remember, the optimum dehydrating temperature is 120 to 140 degrees F.

Cut your chicken breast into strips around 1/4 to 1/8 of an inch. Cut along the fibers of your chicken so it gets chewier for your dog.

Lightly grease your drying trays or wire cooling racks so the chicken does not stick. You can also use a nylon netting or cheesecloth so you can remove the dehydrated jerky with ease. Do not use a cookie sheets.

Place the tray into the oven and cook for 2 to 4 hours, turning them over every 45 minutes to ensure even dehydration. Once cooked, removed from the oven and allow to cool before serving to your dog or storing. If you want to cut your chicken jerky, use kitchen scissors. They are easier to use compared to using a knife.

Since this chicken dog treat recipe does not require any preservatives (aside from dehydrating) it is best to store them in a dry, cool place. They will last one to two weeks inside a dog treat jar and longer if kept in the refrigerator.

Bananas are known to be a good source of energy and a rich source of potassium among others. A lot of dogs seems to be fond of bananas, as I have noticed. But giving them a whole banana is not very good for them, and not very good for the owner too. Like in my case, whenever my dog finishes a whole banana, I ended up cleaning a mess . Like in humans, bananas does not give a dog diarrhea, but it can cure their constipation.

If your dog is particularly fond of bananas, then they are sure to love this banana dog treat recipe. You can give them this as a dessert or after a good long walk.

Ingredients:
2 pieces of Bananas
2 pieces medium-sized eggs
3 cups of Oats (Don’t use the instant one)
1 cup of flour (wheat or rice)
1/2 cup of water

Directions:

Set the oven to 350 degrees F or 177 degrees C line the pan with a cookie sheet. No need to grease them

Sift the flour and mash up the bananas using a fork or a baby food masher. It’s better to use freshly mashed bananas for this recipe.

On a large bowl, whisk the eggs until smooth and without lumps, add the mashed bananas. Gradually add the flour mixing them up in between. Mix in the oats gradually into the mixture, and mix them up well.

With a spoon, drop a dough mixture into the lined pan, leaving an inch between the treats. If you have a small dog, you can use a teaspoon instead to make small bite size pieces.

Cook this in the oven for 15 minutes. Once done, take out the pan and allow the treats to cool before storing or giving them to your dog.

This recipe will yield around 60 (2 inch size) pieces of treats. Remember, these treats will last for a week in regular dog treat jars, a month in the fridge and three months in the freezer.

Just some notes:
Eggs are best to whisk if they are on room temperature. They form less lumps compared with chilled eggs.

Never mix in the dry ingredients all in one go. This would cause your mixture to cause lumps, and would make treats treats cook unevenly

Don’t substitute milk for the water in this recipe. Dogs do not have the right enzymes to digest cow’s milk.

Never add chocolate in the recipe. Chocolates are poisonous to dogs.

It has been proven for decades that oatmeal can prevent heart diseases, and it is a wonderful aid for digestion. Oatmeal cleans up toxins while giving bulk to the food, making it a wonderful agent to help reduce weight, not only for humans but for dogs as well. Obesity in dogs, like in humans, can cause several problems such as cardiac problem and joint problems. In some breeds like dachshund, obesity may lead to slip disk problems. Whether you want to keep your dog in shape or you plan to have your dog on a diet, this treat is a great substitute for the conventional dog treats you often see at the market.

This basic oatmeal dog treats recipe is very easy to make. If you are just starting to make your own dog treats then this is the best recipe for you to start with. You can experiment on this recipe and find out the perfect flavor that your dogs will love.

Ingredients:

3 cups rolled oatmeal (Do not use the instant kind)
1 cup flour (rice or wheat)
2 pieces medium sized eggs
1/2 cup water

Directions:

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F or 177 degrees C. Line your pan with a cookie sheet. This will help prevent the treats from sticking to the pan without the aid of additional grease. Sift the flour.

In a large bowl, combine the water and the eggs and whisk until smooth and without lumps. Add the flour, mixing it in gradually. Add the oatmeal to the dough gradually and mix. If you think it is too dry, add a tablespoon of water. Make sure it does not get runny if you plan to add more water.

With a spoon, scoop a part of the dough and drop it on the pan lined with cookie sheet. Make sure there is at least one inch in between the dough as they will still expand. If you have a small dog, you can a teaspoon instead to make bite size pieces.

Cook this in the oven for 15 to 20 minutes. You can check if it is done by using a toothpick. Stick the toothpick into the treat. If there is some dough sticking to the toothpick, then it means it needs more time to cook. Remember, not all ovens are the same! The right amount of time for your oven may not work on mine.

Once done, take out the pan and allow to cool before serving the treat to your dog or before storing.

This recipe will yield around 60 (2 inch size) pieces of treats. Remember, these treats will last for a week in regular dog treat jars, a month in the refrigerator or three months in the freezer.

Just a few notes:
You can substitute beef, chicken or pork stock for the water and add dried meat to the dough. Just make sure it does not contain any MSG.

Never add raisin, chocolate or grape in this recipe. These are poisonous to your dog.

Whether teaching your dogs new tricks, or when you simply want to spoil them, dog treats are vital in every dog owner’s home. But these treats usually costs a lot for such a tiny amount. Despite being overly expensive, the ingredients for these treats are easily found in your kitchen.

After researching how to make dog treats, as well as experimenting with different recipes, I have finally found the perfect pumpkin dog treat recipe which our dogs love the most. The pumpkin dog treats are now a staple in our house.

What you need:

1 cup pumpkin, preferrably the fresh one. (you can use canned, so long as they’re not spiced, salted nor sugared)
2 medium sized eggs
2 1/2 cup flour (whole wheat flour or rice flour)
1/4 cup water
1/4 salt(not mandatory)

Preparations:
Preheat the oven at 350 degrees F or 177 degrees C. Puree the pumpkin, and sift the flour and the salt. Line your tray with cookie sheets, so there is no need to grease your cookie pan.

Directions:

In a large bowl, whisk the eggs and pureed pumpkin until smooth. Add the sifted flour and salt gradually into the mixture, and mix with a spoon or spatula until there is no lump. You will end up with a stiff dry dough. If you dough is too stiff, knead it some more.

Flour a flat surface/counter and roll out your dough for about half to a quarter of an inch, depending on your dog’s size. Use a cookie cutter to give your treats a shape, or cut them in a square inches.

Bake the cookies in the oven for 15 to 20 minutes until they are firm and light brown on top. Remove your tray from the oven and carefully turn the cookies over and bake them for another 15 to 20 minutes. Make sure they don’t get too brown.

Finally remove them again from the oven and allow to cool completely before you give them to your dogs or storing them in jars with air tight lids.

This recipe may yield 75 small (1 inch) to 50 medium pieces of dog treats. They last a week in regular dog treat jar, a month or two in the refrigerator or 3 months in the freezer.

Just a few notes:

Never dump the flour into the mixture all in one go. This would cause lumps in your dough, and would just give you a hard time.

Never substitute milk for water. Dogs do not have the right enzymes for digesting cow’s milk, and milk would only give most dogs a stomach ache.

Avoid adding spice. That includes vanilla, cinnamon, garlic etc. Most spices are bad for your dog.

Never add chocolate or nuts to the cookie dough. They are poisonous for your dog!
